No, but it's passes the simple WGA validation used in Security Essentials.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation system. It just checks your operating system to see if it's activated or not [offline].

The validation system in Windows Defender is tough. It uses WGA and also checks online to see if the license is valid.

Microsoft Security Essentials is really a great product. It's completely different from Microsoft's other security products. You don't need Windows Defender if you install this. I have seen very good reviews about it.

    Like,

    • Regular updates
    • User friendly GUI
    • Easy to use and configure
    • It detected viruses even Avira couldn't
    • Uses less memory to operate (upto 50 MB)
Lacks many good features of popular other antivirus software like Avira and Avast. Scanning and virus removal/quarantine process is very slow but accurate and doesn't slow down other programs. Overall it's a pretty good anti-virus plus anti-spyware software.

Now that I think about it, Microsoft Security Essentials is not missing any important features. It's just that you won't feel like any anti-virus software is installed in the system, after using products like Avira, Avast, Comodo etc. System works smoothly with no program delay/crash. I disabled Virtual Memory service after installing Security Essentials.

    Missing features

    • Boot time scanning
    • Advanced/Expert settings
    • Cannot select security level
    • No automatic program update
    • Host Intrusion Prevention System [not sure if it's built-in]

Yes, paging file. In Windows XP it's called Virtual Memory.
