home premium will do ur work just fine. u will have the eye candy aero effect and it suits your usage. buying 7 ultimate would be wasteful use of money. you would only get bitlocker drive encryption which someone rarely uses. and another good feature is the xp mode. This can however be simulated in vmware player or virtual box. (free software).. go for home premium

I agree that home premium is all your really need, but if you will use XP applications often then either deal with virtual emulation, or get ultimate which is probably the best emulation. It really depends on what you want to use it for.

Since windows vista, microsoft has introduced a thing called compatibility mode. It is there in windows 7 also. The purpose is to make xp compatible programs run in later windows OS. Still there are some gliches in programs that use specified system files, For those program compatibility mode doesn't work good.
Widows XP mode is not for every other computer. It requires hardware assisted virtualization which is unavailible in many flavours of modern cpus. Apart from that, The bios should also be able to support that. Like in my case, my processor is supported but bios isn't so i had to get a third party bios to experience XP mode. It was very technical, time consuming and risky.
The easiest way to get virtualization is indeed using virtual box. u wont feel a difference. plus this feature is not worth 5000 extra bucks.

Home Premium or Professional.
