I had some issue earlier while i was writing DVD in the middle of it said my windows was corrupted.then i restarted my sys i took 15 mins to restart but (earlier it use to take 1/2 min to 1min).when i check my CPU usage it shows 90% and it was very slowwww.Then i formatted it then it was ok.after 2days i started my pc again it took soo long time then i found the CPU was again 88 to 90% usage i was not runing any app however it is showing 90% usage...Could some one help me how to fix it??????

    I have 2GB RAM
30GB C:\ Drive in which 7 was used for operating sys and other app.

    1. Perform a full system scan and try.

    2. Try system restore.

    No System Restore possible.

What are the other applications ?
Do they appear in Task bar.?Any Antivirus Firewall etc having auto updates /
    1.
As in Xp Pro check in the Task Manager
Applications \ and processes using max CPU.
    CTRL+ALT+DEL
    2.
Download Anvir Task Manager and add /delete start up programs.

May be virus. say you have C and D drive and you have formatted drive C but virus might be active in D.

    1. Install some good AV and make a full scan.
    2. Try avast as it has got boot time scan.
    3. install spybot and make a complete scan.

The other apps are MS Office ,bandwith meter,VLC playeer,Nero and Skype these are the app i use in my sys.

I did format my sys couple of times wht happens is when i format it works fine after 5-6 days again it will use around 80-90% CPU usage and it will take 5-10mins to boot it will take 1min to boot when sys is in good condition.

I have McaFee Total security 2009 anti virus i hope which is very good anti virus to clean virus.

I also did sfc (sys file checker) and did defrag but no use....i absored that when i start my pc in day time there will be no fan sound but when i start at night time there will be a huge fan sound in CPU and it will go after 2-3mins.

I am not sure wht's happening with my PC

Please note the contents of essbebe's replies. Run the task manager. And check which process/program is hogging the CPU. Please report here.

Without this info, it will be impossible to diagnose the problem.

open cabinet, and check few things.

    1. when usage goes 80% up , check if SMPS and CPU fan is working.
    2. If yes, then restart PC and go to BIOS and check CPU temperature.
    3. in task manager you can see which process takes up more memory.

As i mentioned earlier there is a lot of sound from CPU fan when i start my pc in night but not in day time.I saw Mcafee msshield.exe which is taking lot of memory.I also checked in some other site and found this process is required to protect the pc from virus and trojans and other imp works so i can;t stp that.i have formated my pc today and now it is working fine.i have also stopped the automatic updates for my pc.I hope this problem will not repeat again.

    1. Enable Automatic Updates for windows or Any Antivirus you use. Updates are a MUST
    2. To confirm that its McaFee issue, uninstall it. Install some equally good AV like Node32 , Avast , AVG

Actually AV is like ones taste for food and hence it varies from person to person. However i personally use Avast which is free and has excellent detection rate as compared to paid versions. Also its extremely light on system resource. In addition to that i have installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) which is again a light weight anti-virus from Microsoft and free too.
As Avast is a Windows Logo certified software , we can use both Avast and MSE side by side with out any possibilities of conflicts.

To apply passive attacks from browser based applications, install SpyBot Search and destroy and apply passive immunization every 15 days or month.

Node32, Avast and MSE are AV which performs extremely good and less resource consuming AV.

    1) Perform a full system scan with a good AV like kaspersky,nod32,avast etc.

    2) try disk defragment.

the likely cause must be a virus.

Happy to help This trio is an ultimate security and i never had any PC problems after this. My choice goes to Avast / Node 32.

The only problem with Node32 is , it lacks boot time scanner which avast has got and its of great use when some viruses load at boot time.

Can you suggest me which one should i use whether Avast home edition, professtional or pro family pack edition?.As you mentioned that Avast will scan even during boot this feature does have in mcafee total security but still it didn't worked. And i heard that Mcafee has more feature than Avast like site advisor, phising, adware, torjan, parental tool etc.I am asking these question because i donot know much abt Avast and spybot....

    My Choice

    1. Avast Home which is free (it does not means that Pro edition gets updates and free does not) or if you are a tech savy person i will suggest avast 5 which you can download form avast forum. Its in Final Beta stages.

    2. Avast is light weight compared to any AV in market. It too has equivalent tools which Mcafee has. Also if you install MSE and SpyBot , it makes your system secure. and still this trio will use very less memory as compared to Mcafee.

    3. When you install SpyBot, Dont enable real time tea timer. just update its definations every week or every 15 days and then run a passive Immunize button. (download it and install, you will know what i am talking about(

    4. Thus you have only MSE and Avast running in background at any given time. Together it will consume less than 50%+ of what Mcafee was consuming.

    5. It all my personal choice when it comes to security. Choosing AV or any security solution for an average user like you and me is like more of mind satisfaction than actual security. I have my friends use norton , just because of its name.

Thank you for such a valuable information Anil

I have downloaded avast_4.8.13_Professional_Edition,Spybot and MSE and i will check it..
