    Default DDR2 vs DDR3 ?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to find some informations over the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 performance. It seems like everyone who is building a new computer lately is still using DDR2, but wouldnt it be better to switch to DDR3

Is it the price difference too huge between the two, that makes to choose DDR2?

Yes the price difference is just too huge to justify the performance gain. DDR2 will be phased out after some time but untill DDR3 prices stay skyhigh people will continue to use DDR2

There are people who still used their computers from year 2000-2001 with just a few minor renovations like adding more RAM and stuff and they still perform okish.

My belief is that use something untill it actually starts reducing your productivity and in my case I think I can live with a 1gb or 2gb DDR2 Ram as I am not a gamer and dont use high end applications which are very respource intensive.

Buying DDR3 RAm just because its there in the market does not make sense... get it if you are goign to use the edge it has over ddr2. If you are some one like me who just browses the net uses a few light applications and stuff then there is no point spending so much on DDR3 as yet... may be in 3 years when it would be a lot cheaper and there would be something called DDR4 which would cost a fortune then.

    DDR2 - 800Mhz
    DDR3 - 1333Mhz
approx, at the price of 4GB DDR2 you will get 2GB DDR3...plus your motherboard should support DDR3...Newer high end laptops(dell xps, Macbook pro, etc.... ) come with DDR3...
advantage of DDR3 over DDR2 is that it is faster...and uses much less energy than DDR2(good pt for a laptop) ...
downside as u have already said....Price....if u are going in for a new computer ...then go for DDR3....if u are upgrading(assuming that ur motherboard permits).... wont be really much performance increase....unless u want 2 play high end games....

Its not all that faster actually. What you seem to overlook is that with DDR3, you gain bandwidth at the expense of latency. The latency is pretty high on normal DDR3 modules...

Prices of DDR2 are very high now, Its around Rs4200 for 4GB of DDR2 800Mhz memory from a decent brand....

DDR3 Latencies are only numerically higher......the actual time interval is quite similar to DDR2 i.e. around 10 nanoseconds....although totally agree that they are not all that faster especially taking the price into consideration....

as far as price are considered....4GB 1600 Mhz Corsair DDR3 costs around rs 8000 ($160) on amazon....

6GB DDR3 is for $160 (not dominators) and Rs10,500 in india

Also, the latencies are higher and they are just not some numbers ....

DDR3 is not going to phenomenally change the PC experience. Applications may work slightly faster but most will never notice any significant difference.

For the desktops performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 is not very high and i don't think paying huge price for will be of any help to you
