Thread: Gmail Backup

I found many guys to be asking about how to back up their Gmails.
I usually use Google apps on my domain(than the regular @gmail.com domain).

Was searching through various apps and gadgets for Google apps users, and found this one.

After installation of this very software on your computer, you need to run it as Administrator(if ever you want to change the backup directory)

I changed the directory to c:\ and started to synchronise and backup my mail account onto by computer.

You have to give your email id, password and check if you want just the newer mails or all. And it will login you there, just like outlook does, but the best part that you don't have to input gmail pop/imap servers onto it, as preloaded in the program by itself.


I found this way to be quite secure and fast. I ran is at administrator, then only I was able to see my backup'ed emails.

Emails are stored on your machine with .eml extension which is read by email program such as windows outlook, mail etc...

Good info Mickey, but what is the use of having a backup of the email, because it wouldn't ever be deleted or the fact that you wouldn't be able to access it!!

Why download a third party application when Gmail has it inbuilt? I might be wrong and/or misunderstood the product you have posted about but I think Gmail offline thing does exactly the same thing and you dont have to install any third party applications for that.

Just log into your gmail and go to : https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/offline

Choose : Enable Offline Mail for this computer

And then choose what all you want to syncronise and there is also an option to either download attachments with e-mails or not to download... Its got it all.

If you have been using gmail for a few years and are a heavy user with thousands of e-mails in there then it would take a lot of time to sync for the first time... especially if you choose to sync your attachments as well... So if you have a dialup connection or a slower connection and you have 6-7GB of data in your gmail it will take months for you to get it all on your local computer.

For that purpose, one can use any e-mail client available.

And as far as the Gmail Backup you mentioned is concerned, does it allow restoring your mail after deleting them in Gmail?

Google gears will do the work for you I think.

restoring is possible yes..
but i liked the interface of gmail backup...
