But seriously... I never used WMP because I don't like an over-fussy interface to a media player, and I hate being told, sorry, you don't have the codecs to play this: buy them!
VLC, then, came as a pleasant surprise, and I just stuck with it for a long time. Whilst it is not a "fussy" (over-decorated) interface, nor is it the easiest to get anything but the basics from. It is very powerful: discovering that power is not always easy.
I would still agree on VLC for Linux... except for this gapless playback issue, which destroys classical or live rock replay.
This is one of those, surely-this-is-just-basic issues. I do not understand why it is a problem with VLC. I do not understand why it is a problem with several Ubuntu media players.
If you can't play a CD, or a ripped CD, and have it sound just like it would on a CD player ... the media player is terminally broken.
