GOM player and VLC play almost all the different types of media files. If your media file doesnt play on them it will not play on any other player. You can add missing codecs if needed on GOM by following the link when you play a file.

Plus GOM gives full screen play back. I know the others give full screen option 2 but GOM gives true full screen i.e even task bar disappears.Try it, to know what i mean.

    I like playerX for audio.
For video, the Media Player Classic is good, but I've also tried moovida, vlc, songbird, iMusic, etc and found songbird and iMusic to be as good as classic.
I've not tested the GOMplayer or the KMplayer, but guess that these should be equally good.

GOM Player VLC plays almost all types of multimedia files. If your media file does not play on them will not play on any other player. You can add the missing codec. MBO allows full-screen playback. It offer the full screen option 2 but provides GOM indeed in full screen.

Foobar on Windows, although it doesn't qualify as "media" player, because it is only for audio.

VLC, because it is small and simple, although exploration of all its options can quickly become daunting. It ha lots of flexibility and power. It is also cross-platform and the same on Linux as WIndows.

What I don't want: a "fancy" user interface, or psychadelic patterns while listening to music

What I don't need (at least for now): a media library manager. I would rather maintain the files/directory structure that is native to my computer operating system, and the same whatever I use to view it, from the media player to the command line. However, I'm open to this changing some time in the future.

personally i try out new things...
when i have to play some selected songs like on the woofer, i use Windows Media player.
but when comes general usage like watching a film, or downloaded youtube video which is flv file, than vlc is the choice..

vlc is my like player at the first place, as because it can play all kinds of files..

(if anyone knows any other which has better skin than the vlc and can play all formats and more stuff please dont forget to mention)

vlc is not good at handling ordered/linked chapters mkv files but these files are mostly anime related.

VLC is my favourite too, but the Linux version (at least) has one very major disadvantage in playing music. It will not play "gapless".

On an album of separate songs, this is never noticable, but, on a live album, or worse, a long classical piece where the "tracks" may be every few minutes, it introduces small gaps where the music should be continuous.

I think this problem may be on Linux only, but for such a popular and well-respected player, it is crazy that this makes it unusable.

gom and vlc do for me..

gom has auto-streching full screen ability with vlc you it manually.
gom does also play some broken corrupted files. vlc wont.. but still there are many goodies about vlc so i like it too..

dont know why microsoft doesnt bring something that loads quickly and we dont need vlc gom etc..

I'm ashamed to say that I just never noticed, but it does this on Windows too, although the gaps are much shorter. The developers do not seem to be at all concerned. "If it bothers you, write the code to fix it, otherwise..." Fair enough, it is an open source project with community input, but not all of us are programmers.

For video (which I don't watch very often), I'm still with VLC.

For Audio, I have taken to Aqualung. It does not try to be a web browser, magazine, or any such thing: just a music (not video)player. The user interface is not pretty. But it works --- and it plays gapless (unless the gaps are supposed to be there of course!) even with mixed-formats.

It is simple and it works well --- but it has some power too. It has a music manager (although I just prefer to work with directories and files) and uses LADSPA effects, so you can apply a heap of processing to your sound if you want to.

Mine's Linux, of course, but it is available for Windows and others.

    Post is specifically for Audio::

I don't understand why people keep on ignoring WMP and winamp. I personally feel that Window Media Player has some special kind of codecs which makes the sound quality of mp3 files(including FLAC format) excellent compared to other media players(specially VLC).

Winamp, which i have started using again after a long time is making me happy too. Its fast and have some useful plugins.

Media Player Classic is good but bit slow and some times laggy.

    For more information:
    MP3 Software 2012 - TopTenREVIEWS

One important thing which i want to share is a plugin for lyrics which works for vlc, wmp as well as winamp.
Its minilyrics. Google it and install. It automatically download and displays song lyrics as it plays.
    Feedbacks are welcome.

But seriously... I never used WMP because I don't like an over-fussy interface to a media player, and I hate being told, sorry, you don't have the codecs to play this: buy them!

VLC, then, came as a pleasant surprise, and I just stuck with it for a long time. Whilst it is not a "fussy" (over-decorated) interface, nor is it the easiest to get anything but the basics from. It is very powerful: discovering that power is not always easy.

I would still agree on VLC for Linux... except for this gapless playback issue, which destroys classical or live rock replay.

This is one of those, surely-this-is-just-basic issues. I do not understand why it is a problem with VLC. I do not understand why it is a problem with several Ubuntu media players.

If you can't play a CD, or a ripped CD, and have it sound just like it would on a CD player ... the media player is terminally broken.

Windows Media Player with the latest k-lite codecs and their updates. You won't need vlc after installing them and now you will also be able to see thumbnails of all video files. For videos that are difficult to jump in wmp, I use Media Player Classic and for playing broken videos, I use GOM player. Video quality on WMP is way better than VLC so I prefer it always.

I think it is not really about the favourite it is more about the best media player. I personally have only come across VLC and not really explored others.
