Most burning software are heavy on resource. How much RAM do you have ? Upgrade to a higher value. I leave my system idle while burning.

Download Audio CD/DVD Burning - page 1 - sorted by last update descending - Softpedia

Check the system requirements and check the one with lesser memory consumption.

If you have excess of 50 movies to burn, I will suggest that you buy an external 1 or 2 TB HDD instead.

CD or DVD will become unreadable after some days (maybe 2 years). The chances of HDD failing are much less. And also it means less work.

I have a huge collection of original DVDs and BDs (see my signature link). Some of these original disks are giving problems and a four or five of them have become unreadable. I am slowly moving all the collection to HD storage.

What OS are you running? Have you tried the native programs?
Or other free programs(usually light on resources):
    DVD FLICK
    CDBURNERXP
    IMGBURN

Your can either buy an external hard disc with USB support or buy a regular hard disc and case using which it can be used as external USB hard disc. It will work on all PCs irrespective of the RAM in the machine.

You can buy an external 1 TB HDD for around Rs. 6,000. I purchased one (Maxtor) about a year ago for Rs. 6534 (from eBay including shipping).

External HDDs work on USB only - so of course, there is USB support.

There is no direct relation between RAM and HDD. But when the PC is running on full RAM and swapping with disk for virtual memory, all applications will slow down. It is advised to have more RAM (at least 512 MB) espcially if running Windows 2000/XP.
