    Question Can see hidden files but unable to unhide them... Plz Help!

    I am able to view hidden files/folders on my drive but I am not able to unhide them. I have tried to unhide using the properties menu (screenshot attached) and command prompt both but I am not able to do so. This problem started when my USB drive got infected by HEUR.Exploit.script.generic and some of my files and folders became hidden, I am using Kaspersky 2010. Please help me out... Thanks in advance

    1. Try system restore. It may help

    2. Run a scan using CA Yahoo antispy. Comes free with Yahoo toolbar.

    3. Run a full system scan using Kaspersky.

    4. You may also use " No autorun " to prevent such infection.

    try this also to change folder options.
    Luckily there is a new Folder Option called Navigation Pane to switch them back on again. You need to press Alt + T or Organize –> Folder Search Options in Windows Explorer to get to the.........

    Default Thanks for the replies

    Thanks for the replies but nothing seems to be working... I think system restore would have worked but I removed the old system files to cleanup disk space...
    I guess I'll have to format the system..

    Presume you mean OS updates and security updates !

    IF you have the Installation cd
    TRY sfc /scannow command.
    wait......

    Default I have a quite an opposite problem ; I can not see the hidden files in my PC

    Hi

    If I want to see hidden files, normally I use to go to "folder options" - under this goto "view" tab - 'Advanced settings" -- you will find 'Hidden files and folders'.

    Now even if I set it to 'show hidden files.." and try to see my hidden files, I could not see them. When I crosscheck on the above option, it would have reset to 'Do not show hidden.."

    I have installed new original XP professional OS. Still there is a problem

    Normally happens when your PC is infected. The malware disables this option in order to make sure that its files are not found.

    Do you have any Linux installed ?
    From there you can copy any file to another drive/pen drive.
    If you have not installed any Linux, try this.
    Download/get a copy of livecd of any linux distro, run it and from there cut/copy the hidden files to another drive or external drive or pen drive.

    Get a live CD. No need to install. Just insert the live CD disc and boot your system.

    I have installed new original XP professional OS. Still there is a problem
    Now even if I set it to 'show hidden files.." and try to see my hidden files, I could not see them.
    Procedure.
    * Click 'Start'.
    * Open 'My Computer'.
    * Select 'Tools' menu
    * Click 'Folder Options'
    * Select the 'View' Tab.
    (a) * Uncheck 'Show hidden files and folders' in the Hidden files and folders section.
    (b) * Select 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)' option.
    (c) * Check the 'Hide file extensions for known file types' option.
    * Click 'Yes'.
    * Click 'OK'.
    Have you tried (a) (b) & (c)

    2. You could update XP to Sp1/sp2/sp3.
    3.
    Check in gpedit.msc any option for folders.

    Start - Run - gpedit.msc

    Then go to User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Click on Windows Explorer once, in the panel to the right, scroll to "Remove the Folder Options menu item from the Tools menu..." Right click it, and Properties. Then configure it as you want. (Enable/Disable)

    Hi
    the above all methods did not give me the result of seeing hiddenfiles. However, I got from another forum (the details are attached below) that solved my problem.

    Problem
    I want to view hidden and system files on the Windows XP SP2 and for this purpose I am going to Tools/Folder Options/View and removing tick from Hide Protected operating system files and checking Show hidden files and folders
    option. But the windows doesn't show me them anyway. I have checked once again view settings and noticed that the system automatically checks the Hide hidden files and folders option.
    Questions
    1) Is there any way to fix this problem without employing radical solutions and how can I do that please be as much detailed as possible?
    2) Why 2 alternative way of unhiding files using start -> run doesn't work for my case?

    Hi, ramartx!

    Go to the following registry key:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
    DELETE the value CheckedValue in the right window. (Its type should be REG_SZ and data should be 2.)

    Now create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue (same as above, except that the type is REG_DWORD). Modify the value data to 1 (0x00000001).
