Follow up with link given by @crysis80

If the slot is vacant check documentation
use the regular USB port for any 3G USBmodem.
If there is no unit installed, confirm whether you can use the WIFI mode in the laptop. ( wlan adapter details please where installed.)
Seems a WLAN adapter can be inserted here.

    WWAN card needs further study.
    Seems similar to Bluetooth connection.
for smart phones. I am not sure.

Theoretically, you must insert a 3G SIM into that slot. And there is this software known as Dell Mobile Broadband Utility which will help you use the 3G SIM card.

    3g sim card similar ?

So basically all you need to do is track down a 5540 and make sure you order the computer with the TV tuner lid panel so you have the antennae. The laptop should already have a sim card slot under the battery.

The OP is speaking about a 3G SIM card slot present in his laptop. I am using a Dell Studio 15 laptop which has the same slot beneath the battery. I too have always wondered how to utilize it, because inserting a 3G SIM card does not bring about any thing. Then I came to know that in foreign nations, the cellular service providers give SIM cards that should be specifically used on the slot.
