    Default firewalls

i am using a uninor sim which is working pretty good and also gives around 10kBps and 6gb data.. so i download torrents. usually takes 5 days to a week for a 700 mb file. but i can manage that while keeping the desktop on night run.. speeds are awesome considering 2G..

i just wanted to know that how is windows firewall different than the avast anti virus's own firewall system.. do i need to close the windows inbuilt firewalls to work efficiently on torrents???

Avast Free does not have a firewall. If you are torrents, to be on safer side use a firewall. One from Zonealarm will do. Windows firewall is a one way firewall. I blocks unauthorized incoming connection but has no control over outgoing connections. Firewall does not affect torrent speed, just add an exception for your utorrent.

Don't worry. Firewall mainly helps you protect your PC from hackers intrude into it without your knowledge. Avast is good enough, run a full system scan. Or you can use Adaware or Malwarebytes. It is advisable to use one of them with Avast. I think Malwarebytes free does not have active protection. Please check. If so, try Adaware Free.

CA Yahoo antispy that comes with Yahoo Toolbar is also good.

install Comodo firewall and select "paranoid" mode.

It would report any program that tries to access registry or connect to net or receives incoming request. you can select to block some of them if desired.

It would also show list of running programs. You can also select to terminate and permanently block any of them.

even if you have got any malware, this would make them completely ineffective.

Me and a few others had a strange problem with Comodo. It blocks internet. Seen a few people complaining.

I used firewalls all the time, besides this, I didn't use any other firewalls, as Zonealarm you mentioned. So, my computer will get viruses?

Nothing can guarantee complete protection, especially in Indian scenario where people use pirated OS and software. Most cracks have some sort of malware. But using a good antivirus + antispy + firewall and safe browsing habits can save you from most of the trouble. I haven't got any infection in last 1 year (mainly due to Avast web shield). Even last night, I visited a site which was trying to drop a trojan horse to my PC, Avast blocked it.
