Same case with me. Switched back to Firefox 5 and things are better now. What about CPU consumption ?

    1. Mention your system config. How much RAM do you have ? Which processor ?

    2. Do you have too many tabs open on Firefox ? Close those not in use and check.

    3. I am using my spare USB as cache using Ready Boost option. Give it a try.

    4. Update to 7.0.1 and check.

    5. Close Firefox and confirm it is Firefox itself that is causing the problem.

    6. Hope you are not using too many add on. If yes, remove the ones that are not necessary and check.

    7. Open the same pages in another browser and check. You can consider switching to Chrome or Opera.

    intel dual core 1.80 processor
    1 GB RAM
    4-5 tabs in firefox
    firefox 7.0.1
    1 add-on idm
chrome is better than firefox. It takes less physical memory but like firefox.

Certainly, I use more than one browser and Firefox is for general browsing. Try the steps above and consider upgrading your RAM. 1 GB is on a bit lower side considering today's standards.
