I am new to this forum. I am interested in knowing more about how YOU telecom & other ISPs work.

YOU Telecom provides broadband over cable. The other vendors in this area are Hathway, Sify, etc.

The other types of ISP are thos which provide telephony based BB - over fixed landlines or Wireless (Wi Max).

Generally speaking telephony based services are better than cable services.

Thank you for the reply.Being a n00b I wanted to know what care & precautions need to be taken to protect the internet from being hacked.

There are quite a few simple tips:

a) Change router password
b) Change BB user password
c) If using wi-fi, implement wi-fi security
d) Implement strong passwords everywhere (at least 10 chars long with a good mix of uppercase/lowercase letters, numerals, special characters, etc.)
e) Check usage regularly and report any unknown activity
f) Install good AV software and get regular updates

etc.

And a firewall will help stop intrusions while you surf the internet. You can get a free one like zone alarm or use a trail from avg or something similar but dont rely upon windows OS inbuilt firewall as its a load of crap and is easy to breach in my opinion.
