I have never got the maximum speed out of it.

Just cheak your Router GUI web page the Upload and Download Rates. If it shows to you Download 2048Kbps or higher then it and Upload 256Kbps or higher then it then you are OK. You can set the ADSL modulation to G.DMT if possible.

    hi,
You are not the only one getting low speed... there are 4-5 people with the same problem. i think BSNL is limiting the speed and there is nothing we can do about it...refer to this thread for other persons with the same problem

adi420 if possible change your home 500 plan to home 3300 for one month. Because this Plan 3300 is for 2Mbps not the Upto 2Mbps. So you can complain them about your port speed to increase to 2Mbps. After one month you can back to home 500 Plan or you can try with IP tv. If the IP TV install for your port the port speed should be increase to 8Mbps or higher then it. Do just for one month.

Did you get an ADSL splitter ?
    Mention your modem model/make.

I think he is getting an average speed, and as per plan its 256 Kbps Up to 2 Mbps so it can be anything between this.

BSNL Average throughout INDIA is only 1.47 Mb/s

    @cutehkrs
TCP/IP optimiser is an application to change
settings of Internet connection, to tweak for max performance. This application can be down loaded from SpeedGuide.net :: The Broadband Guide.
Better you do not attempt it NOW.

    SUGGESTION
Since you have NU free between 0200AM and 0800AM , please ensure the modem is switched off at about 0155AM. The restart at 0205AM. Again switch off at about 0755 AM
Then restart at 0805 AM for chargeable day usage browsing.
This can be done automatically , but better read the posts here and get a fair background knowledge about Internet.

WARNING Your free usage for this month will not be the full month's quota allowed. only 2/3rd will be allowed ( for say 20 days)

    ID's and passwords
    1. UserID and Password to log in
    2. a 14digit portal ID and default PW password
    BSNL Portal
You will need your Telephone consumer number to check usage.

    3. An email ID and Password to check
email with @ bsnl.in either at Outlook Express or in browser webmail site.
    Get them from your Exchange.

abbreviations commonly used : see this link.

    Modem settings
how to access the modem settings pages (GUI + graphic User Interface)
192.168.1.1 type in browser Address bar.
UserId: admin password default : password.
    Before
    trying any changes
    Select Maintenance Tools and
SAVE present settings to say C:/My Documents / bsnl bb modem settings.

IP-TV: If you are interested in watching TV
programmes in your Desktop/Laptop computer Monitor, you can utilise it. Even if IP-TV is opted , your Broadband speed for Data download will not
    increase

Default hi cutehkrs you can increase speed.

start ur computer in safe mode-logon as administrater (you can also do it in normal mode)-Click start menu -Run -type-gpedit.msc - Local Computer Policy -Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates -Network - QOS Packet Scheduler -Limit Reservable Bandwidth-set it enable which will show 20%-chang it to 0%-restart computer.
Even if it is disabled it will still take 20% of bandwidth reserved for windowsxp updates.so make it enabled and chang it from 20% to 0%.
this trick is worked for me and my download speed increased from 1.4mbps to 1.8mbps.

Default TCP/IP optimiser has done the trick

I have download TCP/IP optimiser from speedguide.net & it has done the trick for me.
Now, i can download @1.8 Mbps during Happy hours(2AM-8AM) but recieving same or less speed during daytime.(Other users in my locality are also not getting the full speed)
but is there any other way that i can reach near 2Mbps during day time or during happy hours.

cutehkrs what you are getting this is the maxium speed from the BSNL.
To browse your router GUI web page click on this link.
    http://192.168.1.1

    Put user id admin
    and password admin

Can you cheak please what is your public IP. is it start from 117 or 59
you can fiend it from here
    www.knowmyip.com

If you have friend and have router Nokia Siemens C2110 you can try with this router.
This router gives some times for some users DL 1.9Mbps.

adi420 if your port speed is changed to 2mbps or higher then it and after one month you back to your 500 Plan they dont change your port speed. The changing of port speed not a eassy process like changing the usears plan. For the ip-tv charges and details you have to contact with your BSNL customer care.

To increase your port speed for getting 2Mbps this is the only process where your port speed will be increase 1Mbps to 2Mbps or higher then it. If the IP TV available in your area I think it's better to take it for one month.
When your port speed will increase from 1mbps to higher you will get your desirable speed.

Same old story, don't check your download speed in any of the BW checking sites.
Just download a file of 40-50MB with a download manager(IDM, DAP, FDM etc) and post the speed here.

ok i agree it may work but 3300 for one month is definitely beyond my reach....if i had that much, I would have looked at changing ISP to Airtel.....

Same for me too, I am happy with my Home 500, 2mbps and night free, that comes close to about 5 GB of download per night(at least), who needs more!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just schedule and sleep.

I am not even a fan of youtube or metacafe. Only surfing and mails cost me about 2 GB of my limit of 2.5GB.

    Hello "DUDE"

Have you checked other threads for home 500 connection problems ?
99% of people get low speed due their wrong way of downloading and wrong modem splitter connection and problem in landline(joints and poor wire quality).

BSNL never ever clips your BW, this happens only in PVT companies. What do you think, BSNL clips BW for 10 people like you and gives good speed to millions of people like me ? I don't think so.

Can you tell me how you download your http links and torrents ?

Please refer to these threads and understand that I dont have any "wrong way" of downloading... I have been downloading for years and I use IDM and utorrent for downloads. IDM gives me a max of 110 kbps with multiple connections for direct downloads from microsoft or any other server. The wire connections are according to the image shown. I have complained numerous times and they have even changed the whole wire from my home to their exchange. According to Indranil (member of this forum), the problem is due to capping of the port speeds. Several people have the same problem not just me. I dont know if BSNL is doing this intentionally or it is a mistake but I am sure that the low speeds I get are a result of BSNL and there is nothing wrong on my side.

P.S. I have attached an Image showing the speed my friend got today. He stays about 20 KM from my home.

    Are you kidding me ?

    230mbps ??????????????

Don't you think there is something wrong ?

    See my speed below............

    Attachment 6089

Which means I can download at 32 MB in 1 sec, wow, that is even faster than my external HDD.

Does that mean that I am getting the speed ?????????????????

    I would say no.

As you said that you are downloading for years, which means you should not believe in such things.

I think i did a mistake by putting up the screenshot of my friend's speed. Even if it is real, it doesn't matter if it lasted only for a few minutes. Anyhow...did you read the links i pasted in my earlier post....can you make a guess where the problem lies? You say that BSNL is not capping the speed...so can you tell me what I am doing wrong...please read all my posts in the links I sent you before replying.

Yeah I know it but puchu says that only private companies cap the speeds. BSNL would not cap the speeds and there is some problem from my side. Lets see what his reply is.

puchu you are getting good downlosd speed.
If you want to test the speed at the Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test then test from the Mumbai server.

puchu the adi420's router shows that his DSLAM PORT where his wire is connected for the ADSL signal this port set the download speed 1Mbps. This problem from the BSNL side not from his side.

Sorry for posting such a lengthy post but I felt it was necessary
    @puchu
I did not post any screenshots of the downloads myself because I am telling you the speeds I am getting. While downloading direct http links with IDM, I am getting a max of 110 kbps and with multiple well seeded torrents, I am getting 100 kbps. I dont know what more can be identified from the screenshots.
The wire from the pole is connected to the splitter provided by BSNL and the outputs from splitter go to the landline and modem. I have even tried connecting the wire from the pole to the modem directly but got no speed improvement.
There might be a joint (broken wire) in the wire and that might be responsible for me getting 100-110 kbps instead of the theoretical speed of 128 kbps.
I keep checking my OS for background processes via taskmanager but there are none. In fact I get the same speeds even on my laptop.
I am not well versed with Linux but I have a knoppix CD lying somewhere. I will try it if i find the CD.
Do I need to tell about the non technical part.....I went through hell trying to explain the BSNL officers about my problem. I visited the local BSNL office first and met the JTO. Explained the problem to him and he told me that since I was getting upto 1 mbps, they cannot do anything more to help me as they promised upto 2 mbps and any speed above 256 kbps was possible. When i took a screenshot of the modem configuration page, they told me that the Rate keeps changing and I will get 2048 some time. I got my connection in feb -09 and I have been checking every single day but the Rate is always the same...in fact it reduced when I had a problem with the wire but it never increased beyond 1024 kbps.
Then I tried complaining online to the grievance cell. After complaining for the second time, I got an angry call from a BSNL officer saying that dont keep complaining and that complaining wont solve my problem. They told me that the low speed was because of a huge demand in my area and everybody in my area got low speeds. This I proved to be false just by taking my modem to the local office (200 meters from my home) where it got 2 mbps.
Then I tried calling the customer care number and got 15-20 numbers of various officers. I called each and every one but everybody told me the same answer that my plan did not promise speed of 2 mbps and it keeps on changing. They told me I should consider myself lucky for getting atleast 1 mbps where as the promised speed was only 256 kbps. Spoke to all SDE, JTO, CRO and many more whose designations I dont know even. I could do nothing more.

Looking at this thread, I can generalize on some things:

    About BSNL speeds
    • BSNL uses a contention ratio of 50:1. That means that 50 users use the same (12 mbps) pipe.
    • This means that if all users are logged in at the same time, each will get a minimum of 256 kbps.
    • However, all users are never logged in at the same time and a load balancer balances the user distribution across the various pipes.
    • The upper speed limit is capped as per your plan.
    • Hence the statement, 256 kbps and up to 2 mbps. That means that you will get a promised 256 kbps and anything from 256 kbps to 2 mbps.
    • If there is a heavy load of users in a particular area/exchange, you will never get the max speed.
    • BSNL will disclaim any complaint as long as speed is above 256 kbps - very sad but true. They are not really concerned about the customers. The babus have an assured job, no real incentives, no performance measures and believe that customers are pests.

    Speed tests and accuracy
    • Speed tests in BSNL speed tests is never accurate.
    • Use a reputed test site such as speedtest.net
    • Even then, the speed test may not be 100% accurate.
    • Speed is promised within BSNL network only, i.e., from your modem to the BSNL's BRAS.

    Other factors
    • Joints in wires, etc. may affect connectivity and continuity.
    • Check the SNR margin and line attenuation.
    • Distance from the exchange also affects the speed in reverse proportion.
    • Check my signature and the first link in that signature. I have posted some useful links.

Finally, never shout/curse at the BSNL folks. You will get nowhere. You have to be sweet to them, instead of the other way round. A "friendly" linesman may agree to your case and get the port changed at the exchange. Read my thread on "My interactions with BSNL".

adi420 if you are in my exchange area or If I working in your exchange area I will increase your port speed. Then you dont need Spoke to all stupid SDE, JTO, CRO
Yes, I agree that 256Kbps is promice speed. But BSNL say up to 2Mbps So the user's Port speed should set to 2mbps. The speed will UP and Down if all users are logged in at the same time, each will get a minimum of 256 kbps, yes this will automatic. Dont need to set the port speed low.
Any way I set all the DSLAM port speed in my working exchainge Upload for 256Kbps and download for 2048Kbps. For who are having the IP-TV or 8Mbps I set their DL port speed 10Mbps and up for 1024Kbps. They are HAPPY and I am happy too.

I am not in hyderabad. Im in West Bengal. I know the SDE or Internal DE can help with changing the port speed if user face the problem. The order to changing the port speed or any kind of other things related to the server given from the SDE or DE internal. Our SDE and DE internal are very very good person. They listen the problem of the user and help them. They are very good person. I am really surprised when you say that you all rady Spoke to all SDE, JTO, CRO and they dont do anything about this. I dont know what kind of people this are working in hyderabad BSNL.

Please remember that BSNL mention upto 2Mbps thats mean the port speed set to 2Mbps and the speed up and down depain on the how mutch user log in at same time, this is automatic. But this is not mean that there is lots of user so I set all port speed to 1Mbps.

    @cutehkrs and @adi420

hope you are getting the results from either mumbai server or Chennai server. I feel the assured band width is 256Kbps NOT KBps (B=8*b)from the server located in your town, provided your end link is good( not at far end like 5KM from exchange, or with a long service cable with many joints and also that you don't connect phones or any other equipment before the SPLITTER.

you may call for Dataone WebMail or the other link indicated by bsnl to you.
take speed test there only. the first reading that you get is realistic. if you press repeat, you get erratic like many MBps.
While on the process i tested my download speed that was 1780kbps and the disclaimer that comes is appended below
    "Disclaimer:
This application downloads file from BSNL server and downloaded data will be counted as data download for the purpose of Volume based Billing. BSNL does not claim that you will get the same download speed from all other National and International web sites. This download speed is just an indication of download speed limit supported on your BSNL dataone connection or on the link by which you are connected to the Internet in ideal conditions, and is not the absolute download speed limit."

I only feel, let us not go by the mathematics and say i got one more than you etc.
as far as your downloads are fine, enjoy. I find more of expectation than what we pay for, (i have a Home 500) and then get dejected and start blaming others including the service providers.

I remember to have indicated once that unlike other private service providers, bsnl is only service minded, perhaps the local staff appear little harsh or bureaucratic ( carry forward legacy). as many feel, bsnl doesn't have what is called cheating. mistakes of billing or errors like charging 12,000 for 120 are curable.
In case of Pvt service providers, i fear, many times you don't be able to reach any tech support other than the agents, who are putting deaf ear to customers woes, in private service. I know they don't have staff to deal with service matters. their only motto is to bo business and show profit.

We may also accept logically that bsnl can't just open up any bandwidth for all and pay for it to the bandwidth provider, while servicing you at the plan cost.

i rather fear, whether we are (including me) are selfish to the extent , to get the best and at w the least price? we should reasonably put forth our motto of what exactly we want? then, if it is logical, perhaps service and support groups can us that info and go for a dialog with bsnl or even to TRAI with our suggestions.

So let us consolidate and then we can do something.

hope you are getting the results from either mumbai server or Chennai server.

If the higher limit is 2mbps then out of 100 iterations(suppose) with downloads from different servers around the world(good servers like softpedia, MS, cnet etc), the speed should reach close to 2mbps at least once if not perfect 2mbps.

According to Adi's posts, he has never got speeds close to 2mbps=256kBps. The max he got any time is less than the 50% of max speed.

    Default Speed goes down

    My plan BSNL Home 500C
    Hello friends.
Once again my speed has gone to disastrous 256~400 kbps(or 32~50kBps) which is much lower then i was getting a week before.
Any suggestion or should i directly contact to that brainless people in BSNL exchange.
I have read that they disclaim any complaint if the speed is more then 256kbps.
BSNL will disclaim any complaint as long as speed is above 256 kbps - very sad but true. They are not really concerned about the customers. The babus have an assured job, no real incentives, no performance measures and believe that customers are pests.
So please tell me what to do.
I am not able to open my modem's configuration via "192.168.1.1"

Adi needs to clarify and check his local wiring and also indicate the distance to the exchange serving him. and manage to get any contaminated joints if any in his service lead, BSNL or MTNL helps replace any wire with more than 2 joints in it in the outdoor, as a drive to maintain quality

1.Are you able to access 192.168.1.1 now ?
    2.The snr attn details:
    from menu Statistics ADSL page.
    3.
Why you want to reset the modem ?
Usually the access point will be near the power/supply switch , or at the bottom of the modem near right side. A small round hole.

    4. see 5 below
Use a ballpen refill for 20 to 30 seconds with power on.

    5.
Earlier Under Management/maintenance save current modem settings to say C:/Documents/modem old values. sept 23rd.

This is a pic of the M torrent speed in my computer. The download speed was 240-270 KBps. A 750 mb movie takes 35-40 mins to finish. My ISP speed is about 2.2mbps

Can you tell me how you download your http links and torrents ?
why are u so angry yaar......

and what is the wrong wire connection?
it might be the problem because of which i get low speeds.
