    1. Mention modem - model and make.

    2. Go to speedtest.net, perform a speed test and pingtest. Post forum link here.

    3. Where did you get this value ? Direct download ? If yes, do you use a download manager ? What is the speed you get on torrents ?

    4. Download any file from Microsoft and report the speed here (Use a good download manager like IDM). Also disable firewall and antivirus while download.

    5. Which DNS do you use ? Mention the values here.

    Try the following values and report if any change

    208.67.222.222, 8.8.8.8

    It is a combination of Open DNS and Google DNS.

    6. This may help

    7. If nothing works, complain here and wait for BSNL staff to respond

    280-320ms is normal for USA.
    220-260 is normal for EU and other parts of Asia (well some asian servers are in the 100-200ms range, really depends)
    Within india it's really irrelevant but obviously should be sub 50ms.

    Run some pings and post the results when you think the internet seems bad.
    Goto command prompt and type
    "ping <server ip address/website> /t"
    like, say "ping Google /t"
    or "ping 66.199.244.82 /t"

    right click copy paste the results here (use tags)

    Also, try tracert - you can use command prompt or just download a tool like WinMTR, d3tr, pingplotter or colasoft ping tool.

    I use a bsnl 500 combo and get around 150-200kbps in the night.
    torrent speeds are very dependant on seeder/leacher counts and their location though.

    Try link in option 7. See what happens. You can also visit SDE of your exchange and check on the issue.

    High ping can affect browsing experience, you can try finding a suitable DNS using Namebench (link below)

    namebench - Open-source DNS Benchmark Utility - Google Project Hosting

    Mostly high pings are line / server issue, there is nothing we can do. Better talk to SDE.

    the pings you posted are completely fine ... do you not understand that ?
    300ms is normal to an american server; actually quite good; I said this in my post.
    The traceroute is also fine.

    Post pings/traceroutes when they are NOT fine. It's completely useless to show us perfect pings.

    Your results are fine according to your plan.

    Dont consider results of bangladesh ping because no website that you will visit in general has there server in bangladesh.

    Pings to USA, UK, Netherlands, France and germany are important because 99% websites are there and for BSNL 300 is ok.

    For better ping result switch to airtel if your pocket allows.

    The main reason for high ping is bad peering of our ISPs with international ISPs. Even internal peering is not that good in India.

    Although China & Bangladesh are neighbouring countries but there is no direct peering between our ISPs & their ISPs, so data packet has to travel a very long distance through International ISps which causes high ping.

    I am also on same plan and these are my reults

    USA

    India

    France

    The speed you are getting should be 56 KBPS not 56kbps

    1KB = 8kb
    so 56kbps=448kbps which is ok speed

    KB = Kilobyte
    kb = kilobit

    I don't see 760ms values in any of the pings/traceroutes/pingtests you've posted so far. Obviously 760ms is not normal.
    Post a ping or traceroute when latency gets this high. Traceroute will let us tell you quite easily if it's a local problem (high latency in local hops), or just a typical bad routing problem to a particular continent (high latency in later hops).
