    Question new bsnl evdo connection (july 2012 behala, kolkata) + wifi router

    theres lotza old info floating around, which made me argue with bsnl officials today. so i wish to update some info

    applied for new evdo conn today (saturday) at behala exchange around 12noon. was supposed to get it on monday but they called me up @ 3pm and delivered

    following cost incurred:-
    1199 - hardware - prithvi 3.1mbps rev.a modem
    350 - activation @ 750 UL plan - gives 399 balance - 1month validity
    20 - for 6month validity
    450 - topup - gives 400 balance
    ---------------------------------
    800 balance => 750 deducted for UL plan => 50 balance

    they'll provide USER/PASS for yr acc ... or u can use demo user/pass => 165/165

    after u install device, following settings to b made b4 connecting....
    user/pass as they provided
    dial number => #777
    choose EVDO ONLY, not 1X or auto

    balance enq => 18003455123 => language => 4 (balance enq) => 919433312345 (yr card#)

    to use google DNS with prithvi, goto control panel => network connections => USBDEVICE => RIGHT CLICK => properties => networking => tcp/ip (v4) (double click) => use following dns => primary (8.8.8.8) & secondary (8.8.4.4)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    now about compatibility with wifi router... it works out of the box with tp-link mr3420 (& hence mr3220)... u just need to choose manual config =>
    dial number - #777
    APN - BLANK
    user - wat bsnl gave u
    pass - ,,
    save.... & if it doesnt connect, just reboot router
    its also a good idea to use google dns
    Thumbs up
    for those getting low speed, this might b an inspiration:-
    wat a nice start this morning..... 212kB/s on TORRENT & today is thursday... whereas when i took the conn on saturday, it was 25kB/s on FLASHGET direct download
    evdo.JPG
    25 => mail to bsnl => 60 => 100 => mail to bsnl => 200 ...i just looooove govt offices man.... if u kno where to complain, miracles happen.... sitting right @home
    same happened with bsnl 3G... there was no signal & in 2months they installed a freaking tower ....and same happened with speed post where the addressee said he didnt get the package & mail to postal authority & postman goes directly to tat person's office & pulls out the package
    a little tutorial bout LINE SPEED & bandwidth...
    line speed is measured in kbps or mbps ....note the 'b' in small representing BIT
    divide it by 8 and u get bandwidth which is measured in kBps or mBps... some ppl like me prefer to distinguish it by writing kB/s or mB/s
    * note the 'B' in caps representing BYTE
    ** this is the actual amount of data transaction per second
    1 mbps (1000 kbps) line hence wud giv 125 kB/s
    & so on.....
    equating => 1 mbps for 5min (300sec) = 125 kB/s x 300s = 37500 kB = 37.5 mB
    none of these r measures of HOW FAST THE CONNETION IS... the fastness or responsiveness is defined by PING... if u ping 8.8.8.8, on evdo it wud b ~150ms... on reliance 3G its ~85ms... on fiber its ~49ms (milli second)
    Enjoy it while it lasts, as their user base is growing day by day,thanks to the unlimited download offer .So all the places where users are more the speeds are dropping and congestion is increasing.
