Yes you can make a bootable external HDD. Exactly same process. If you need it to be created from windows then format the drive with FAT 32 .(if you have multiple partitions on your HDD then the first partition is most preferable place to install the OS) Then follow the same process as in my blog. Some times the drive may refuse to be bootable of drive restrictions. Search for "-ma" and replace with "-fma" inside the batch file (mentioned in blog).
