Alert: Reducing Number of Active Users!

Exclamation Alert: Reducing Number of Active Users!

The Number of Active members in the Forum was about 5000 till some days(about a month) ago. I have been noticing that that the number of active users in decreasing day by day although the total number of members is increasing.

    Current Active Members: 4,133

I have noticed a strange problem while logging in to the forum. Same problem is with the women's forum also.

Most regular members dont logout often - so dont notice this.

The forum is popular by the name of indiabroadband.net

Many people browse sites without the www in the url.

Now ... When trying to log into "indiabroadband.net" ... the login doesnt works. the same page(logged out) is shown even when a user tries to log in. This can be very confusing and can drive away some new or less active users.

The login works fine when logging in to "www.indiabroadband.net".

This can be a reason of the reducing number of Active members.

Admin ... Plz solve the issue. Time to put your Webmaster Hat on

I have and am facing this issue since long. even when logging in from "www.indiabroadband.net"
even after logging in the log-in page is again displayed. but then I click on "today's post" and the page changes to logged in status.

Yes ... clicking on any link does it. when we click on any link - the url contains "www". Actually when we try to login to http://indiabroadband.net ... The login work actually happens but still shows the logged out page. After clicking any link of the forum ... the logged in page is shown.

It is the way the cookie is stored in your computer. The cookies is always stored with the "www" prefix.

When logging in without prefixing 'www', it cannot find the cookie and hence asks to login again.

All internal links are to the website with the 'www' prefix. Hence when you click, 'today's posts', the cookie is used and you are taken to the website with "logged in" status.

This was explained by Admin some time ago.

Bottomline: Always login to URL with the "www" prefix. You will never have this problem.

Ya. That we can understand. But, it can be confusing for new members. http://indiabroadband.net/ can be redirected to http://www.indiabroadband.net/ to solve the issue. Whenever someone tries to open http://indiabroadband.net/ it should be redirected to http://www.indiabroadband.net .

    @j4k

What do you think is the reason behind reducing number of Active Users!?

That might be some problem with the cookie settings of your browser. Make sure cookies are enabled.

It may not be a problem at all. Just a bug or the way the VB software calculates active members.

The reason you see reducing number of active members is that I have made a few changes to the forum and one of them is that guest visitors can now view unlimited number of pages without having to register so the number of new members that register every day has come down by more then 60% and that takes away a chunk out of the active members numbers..

I just thought that its not a very good idea to make some one register just to view the threads as those people who register that way dont ever participate in any of the discussions and there is no use them being a member here as they would never be active... So now if anyone rgisters here it will be out of their own will and not a compulsion...

What do you guys say shall we keep it like this or change it back to what it was like before?

Thats a good idea Admin. I was thinking the same from very long time but didnt care to tell it as everybody here was thinking that more number of registering is good for the forum.

Now allowing them to see it will help a lot in saving the diskspace of their usernames also. Now if they register they will post something here and thats really good for the forum. You can even say that if a member doesnot login for 3 or 6 months then his ID will be deleted. Ok lets think about this later.

For now what you have done is a very good move.

no not like that, i said that only for registering and going people not for regular members. we can see a lot of people who post just 1 or two posts and disappear for them that rule is. Not for regular posters.

Ya its difficult to differentiate between regular & non regular, will think of some other way

Many do not bother to register for viewing one or two threads. It will help us avoid the traffic diverted to other sites. We have many tempting threads, they will register to answer if come across any.

I strongly feel that compelling one to post by banning for not posting will be too harsh. It is better to be silent than write anything silly. Sharing of knowledge is good and alright and I believe in that too. You can consider banning if one does not post for a longer period like say 1 year or more. All cannot be players and many are comfortable to be watchers. I prefer to be a watcher and I shall definitely post when I am required and feel comfortable in the topic.

Nobody has been banned for not posting. Only those who spammed or posted advertisements have been banned. Their posts were deleted as well.

What I said was that (regardless of the message posted above), no one has been banned because of zero posts, inactivity etc.

I know this because I can see the list of banned users.

Whether id's have been automatically deleted, I cannot say - but on the whole I do not think that, that is the case too.

I was asking it to be made permanently public but there should not be any visible links on any page.

it would be good if you could just enter a correct url to see the page, that way new members won't wander off to the ban logs.

At the moment, the banned user list appears in Moderator Control Panel only.

It will need some web programming to make the list public via a php page. Only Admin can do such changes to website.

    Interesting suggetion though.

You guys are taking it wrong... that message about id will be deleted and all only applies to those who have zero number of posts ...

If some one has an id and has only made 1 post in the last 4 years well his/her id will not be touched... we have menbers from 2006 who have never posted anything and just never came back... so I am planning to prune the members list and only have those members who have got atleast 1 post to their credit and those who are more then 6 months old members and still do not have a post will get deleted...

Is it not fair enough? If you disagree please shout and we can talk about this

I think the policy to disable membership for long dormant members (membership more than 365 days, zero posts) is fair.

Nothing more will be heard on this.
The central committee of the Soviet union has felt and come up to this decision that banned users list must be made public by the General Secretary, State duma, and Supreme Soviet. And that the Premier should post the report based on it.

We donot have any policy on that - rather a commandment.

Thou shalt not create duplicate id's.

@Endless_Sky/Rupu1983, we do not have a problem that you are a duplicate; but you can ask Admin to convert all your ES authored posts into the other user-id and delete ES user-id.

Duplicate Id is so meaningless - for the regular user. I mean, what can you do with a duplicate id, except to reply to your own posts.

During the last competition, we suspected that some people used duplicate id's to increase post count. You may ask how that helps? The reason is the forum has implemented double (consecutive) post auto-merge option. As you know, if you post immediately after your previous post, the two posts get merged into one. So the trick is to have someone post in between. So a user created a duplicate id, and posted a meaningless post like a 'smiley', 'thank you', etc. and then posted from his own (real) id.

Other than the above, I do not find any reason why people should have a duplicate id. Maybe some people created multiple id's just for fun. But I am thinking that they are not using all at the same time.

Hence we have no policy/rule for duplicate id. But as I said, the Admin/Mods have the right to ban any member with or without reason. But as duplicate id's cause no harm (except if they are avatar's of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde), there is a tolerance.

If someone wants duplicate id's deleted, send PM to Admin/Mods. Mods cannot delete an id, only ban the user. Admin can do both.

Just for clarification from my side.

I was asking 1 ID to be deleted because i want my username (of this account) changed. Some months back i had asked smoothie to do it, but he said as a person is already registered he cannot do it.
